Decades of findings indicate that a profound understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of cancer—how it forms, why it persists, and what leads to its spread within the body—can bring better outcomes for patients. New fields of foundational cancer research, including the differences between each cell within a tumor and how the tumor's environment affects its progression, as well as how an individual's immune system defends itself, will lead to improved results for patients.
The growth of tumors does not solely depend on the composition of their own cells, which has also become evident. The microenvironment of tumor growth and the vigor with which the human immune system recognizes and attacks cancer are equally crucial. A major challenge is understanding the interactions between the tumor and its microenvironment. Ultimately, we will need to decode the signals that tumors send to nearby immune cells and determine which aspects of the surrounding environment contribute to keeping the tumor small and benign or allowing it to grow and spread uncontrollably.
